Artisan chili, a Blaster and marathon runners

Ian, Annette and Elisa Mullikin

By Mac Neely

Last week, I neglected to mention the chili cook-off at the Artisans of Mancos. There were 10 entries, all delicious, served with crackers and cheese. The winning green chili was made by J. Milton Beens. He is a potter and painter. His artwork is tops. His chili is as good as his artwork.

A Blaster at the Strater

Wednesday night, 11 of us from Mancos went to the Strater Hotel in Durango to hear Dave Alvin and Jimmie Dale Gilmore. It was a good show with great music. I’ve known Dave since the 1980s and his days with the Blasters. And he only gets better each year.

Heading to the Boston Marathon

Annette Mullikin, Mancos’ own physical therapist, is running in the Boston Marathon on April 17. This started with her two athletic and intelligent children each running a Boston qualifying race and achieving a qualifying time. Feeling left out, Annette decided to find a qualifying race and hit her targeted time. She quickly ramped up miles and went to Salt Lake City to run the REVEL Marathon, and did well. Even with a qualifying time, one is still not guaranteed entry, because there are limited spots. Their times were all good enough to allow them the chance to enter the first day, and all were accepted. This will be the first for Ian and Elisa Mullikin, and Annette’s third time. Annette also felt it would be a great way to celebrate her 60th year, by running a marathon with her children (even though they will be ahead of their dear old mother). She has had more joint surgeries than anyone should have in a lifetime. But running keeps her going. The marathon is on Patriots’ Day, a legal holiday in Massachusetts to commemorate the battles of Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775. It’s held on the third Monday in April and is the traditional date of the Boston Marathon.

Let’s wish them the best of luck.

Help support public radio

I know you all like media, or you wouldn’t be reading this. Radio station KSUT just concluded its spring on-air fund drive. It is now that listener support is more important than ever. The U.S. has cut public radio funding, and KSUT receives 27 percent of its budget from federal funding. Please go to www.ksut.org and click on the “donate” button on the top right. Also, please support KSJD public radio for Cortez, Mancos, Dolores and Rico (www.ksjd.org). Thanks for your help.

Book sale

The Mancos Public Library is having its annual book sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 1.
