Montezuma County sheriff warns residents of phone scam

A man is attempting to swindle residents by telephoning them and falsely identifying himself as “Deputy Walker,” of the sheriff’s citation and warrant service, the Montezuma County Sheriff’s Office said on Wednesday.

He is swindling people out of thousands of dollars, a spokesperson from the sheriff’s office said.

“We do not have a ‘Deputy Walker,’ nor a citation and warrant service division,” the sheriff’s office said. “The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office is working on this scam also, as the phone number comes out of Grand Junction.”

The caller has been leaving the number 970-216-6717, but could change his number or name at any time. Residents are cautioned to be wary of any caller asking for money for any reason, and to verify the authenticity of the caller.
